Full Garden Miss Chalfant

Lecture excerpt for this garden

(15) Miss Chalfant's garden on Sewickley Heights has many interesting features. One walks from the terrace of the house through a perennial garden and down this flight of steps, the walls thickly planted with tiny rock plants, to a blue slate flagged terrace. The high hedge is a double planting of lonicera bella albida. It makes a dense hedge of a beautiful gray green. (16) To the right and left of this terrace are two small gardens; one garden that is entirely green and a lovely background of trees. (17) The other garden is always in blue all the summer through. Two little lead figures center the beds. (18) Now we are at the end of the rose garden looking up toward the terrace upon which we have just been standing. A double staircase leads down from the terrace to the arched tea house. The pool is edged with ivy, and the rose garden is abloom all summer.
