Full Garden Mrs Charles D. Armstrong — Cape Cod

(4) This garden is not in Pittsburgh. It belongs to one of our members, Mrs. C. D. Armstrong, who has a large estate on Cape Cod. As the family has lived abroad, and travelled a great deal, they have incorporated many garden ornaments from Spain and Italy in this Cape Cod garden. The box is exceedingly good, and. within the last few years there has been a very interesting box nursery developed on the place. (5) A higher hedge would have been infinitely more effective as a background for the beautiful old columns, and for the fountain in the fore ground. In Italy and France if you remember, the hedges are always extremely high and severely clipped to make a formal background, or a natural planting of trees, which must be very tall to be effective. (6) This is a Heliotrope garden - paths and beds outlined in box; mass planting of heliotrope and standards of heliotrope. The old well head with its lion came from Italy.
