Full Garden Mrs James D. Heard — Bar Harbor

Lecture excerpt for this garden

(42 [Archivist's Note: No slide]) Mrs. James D. Heard has a tiny garden at her Pittsburgh house. Her real garden is at her summer estate in Bar Harbor. This garden deserves a lengthy description. It is unique and perfectly done. (43) The house is a small Italian villa type, overlooking the blue waters of Frenchman's Bay. (44) Entering through the archway the sound of water at one's left shows this lovely little fountain, a Verrochio Cupid flagged by yews and blooming plants in pots. (45) Directly in front is the vine-covered pergola against the high wall, (46) and on the low sea rail is this lovely "Pan" with his background of blue water. (47) Flowers bloom remarkably in this northern climate. This is the entrance to the house, and as we turn we look down the (48) garden path toward the Bay. (49) This is the detail of one of the little stone statues in the garden - (50 [Archivist's Note: No slide]) and this last slide in Mrs. Heard's group, shorn the beautiful colonnade that shuts off the garden from the woods beyond, and one of the most magnificent trees on the coast.
