Full Garden Mrs William Thaw Jr.

Lecture excerpt for this garden

(126) Mrs. William Thaw, Jr. has a very interesting garden near her house. The garden was laid out by Olmstead and all the planting on the estate was done by that famous firm. A three-sided pergola leads from the house to the sunken garden, in the center of which is a statue made by Frank Vittor. (127) The beds are all box bordered, and from early Spring to late Fall are masses of bloom, with accents of larger box bushes. In June the pergola is a mass of roses, and during the late summer they are gorgeous with berried vines. (128) Beyond the swimming pool, and down toward the rock garden, there is a wide meandering path of iris, backed with yew and spruce tree trees. (129) A wide pathway leads down to a summer house overlooking the rock garden, (130) and there is a large natural pool surrounded in the spring by flowering shrubs, and in the fall, when this picture was taken, by trees which turn to various hues of gold and orange and red. This estate was chosen a few years ago for its beautiful rose garden, as a meeting place of the Rose Society of America, and last summer this estate was chosen by one of the great Electrical firms as the garden par excellence, to be lighted by their experts. The state was open for a week at night, and Mrs. Thaw was extremely gracious in her invitations to those who were interested in the lighting of gardens, a new field in this country.
