Slide 019 — Miss Chalfant, Sewickley

Excerpt from Mrs. Hunt’s lecture

(19) Another garden on Miss Chalfant's estate is perhaps the most charming of all. One looks out directly from the dining room of the house into this quiet spot. The wall is of dull old brick, whitewashed and rubbed. The niche is deep Italian blue, and since the picture was taken, a most lovely polychrome Madonna has been set, carrying out the color scheme- Della Robbia plaques on either side. To the left is an old Norman wall fountain brought from Aix-en-Provence. On the side walls are pleached fruit trees, and the garden is charmingly planted. Even little standard currant bushes have been brought in to make charming accents later in the fall. Pitkin & Mott were the original landscape architects for this estate.
